Bleak Mid Winter

Welcome to my gallery of winter watercolour paintings. Winter Silver birches and Curious Fox in the Winter Woods are currently on display at Artscape Gallery, Battlers Green. To me winter is one of the most beautiful and inspiring times of the year, and the best time to paint trees. Without their leaves you can see the shapes and forms of the branches, and they make fantastic silhouettes against the winter sky.

Winter Silver birches

The first painting of the Silver Birches series, and the first painting on Arches 300gsm Hot Press paper, which was a revelation. With hot press paper I was able to create details like never before, and the detail of the bark was crucial. I wanted to capture the signature silver birch bark patterns. This was used for Christmas Cards, with a gothic fairytale twist.

Curious Fox in the Winter Woods

Painted in watercolour, this is the second in my silver birches paintings, completed as a favour for my mother who wanted Christmas Cards made by me to send to friends and family. They were a great success, and have been requested by other members of the family for the following Christmas. The fox is an addition to add a pop of colour in contrast with the muted trees, snow and background. It also adds a touch of storytelling.
